App choice and setup

Getting started

Which app should I use?

Use AfterSurg Recovery if you want to see your own recovery curves and metrics. Use AfterSurg Outcomes only when a study or clinical team has invited you and supplied a four-digit project code.

When should I download the app?

Ideally download it at least a day or two before an operation so permissions and setup are complete. Some historical activity may be available, depending on your phone, operating system and permissions.

What access code should I enter?

Use the four-digit code supplied by your clinician or project team. Independent Recovery-app users may be instructed to use 0000. Enter any participant ID exactly as supplied; never substitute your name or date of birth.

Why does the app ask about age, fitness or operation details?

Non-identifying details can configure the experience and help put activity into context. The app does not need your name to provide its core functions.

What if my phone software is too old?

Update to the newest supported version available for your phone. The current apps support recent iOS and Android systems; very old devices may not support the required health-data services.

I denied access to Apple Health or Health Connect. What should I do?

Open your phone settings, find AfterSurg or AfterSurg Outcomes, and enable the requested activity permissions. On Android, also check that Health Connect is installed or enabled and has a step-data source.

Why is Android not finding my steps?

Check that Health Connect is enabled, a compatible step source such as Samsung Health is connected, and AfterSurg has permission to read steps. Older activity may be unavailable if it was never stored in Health Connect.

My operation or intervention is not listed

Do not choose a different operation simply to continue. Contact support or your project coordinator so the correct configuration can be confirmed.

Activity and recovery

Understanding the information

When will recovery information appear?

In the Recovery app, information usually appears after at least one complete day and becomes more useful after the operation date. AfterSurg Outcomes is intentionally blinded and normally does not show recovery graphs.

Why does today look unusually low?

The current day is incomplete. Compare complete days and broader patterns rather than interpreting a partial-day value.

Does the phone record all my activity?

No. It may miss activity when you are not carrying the phone, as well as some swimming, cycling, gym work or other movement. Longer-term patterns are more useful than individual days.

Can I use a smartwatch?

Yes, where the watch synchronises compatible activity information with Apple Health or Health Connect and you have granted the required permissions.

What do the recovery metrics mean?

Recovery milestones describe the initial dip and return towards baseline. Beyond-baseline measures describe longer-term change, including functional gain, good-day ratio, duration of benefit and extra active days.

Why do the Outcomes and Recovery apps look different?

The Recovery app provides patient-facing feedback. Outcomes is designed for objective research or service-evaluation collection and is deliberately blinded so feedback does not influence behaviour.

What if my result sits outside an expected curve?

A curve is descriptive and is not medical advice. It cannot diagnose a complication or decide whether your recovery is safe. Contact your healthcare team if you have concerns.

Do I need to open the app every day?

Usually not. Activity is collected by the phone’s health-data system in the background, subject to permissions. Open the Recovery app periodically to refresh information; Outcomes may need only occasional checks.

AfterSurg Outcomes

For invited participants

Why have I been asked to use AfterSurg Outcomes?

Your clinical or research team is using objective activity information for an approved trial, observational study, audit, service evaluation or real-world evidence project.

What is my participant ID?

It is a code supplied by the project team so they can link your information within their approved records. Enter it exactly as given and do not enter your name or date of birth.

Which phones are supported?

AfterSurg Outcomes is available for recent iPhones and supported Android phones. Android devices use Health Connect to provide activity data.

Why can’t I see graphs in AfterSurg Outcomes?

This is intentional. Blinded collection reduces the risk that feedback changes participant behaviour and affects a study’s results.

What can my clinician or study team see?

That depends on the approved project configuration. Teams may receive pseudonymised participant summaries or aggregate outputs. AfterSurg is not a live monitoring service.

Does joining affect my NHS or clinical care?

Participation is normally voluntary and should not affect your care unless your project information clearly says otherwise. Ask the inviting team about your specific project.

Is there a charge?

The apps are currently free to download. Participants in commissioned studies or clinical projects are not normally charged by AfterSurg.

Privacy and safety

Your information and clinical care

Does AfterSurg track my location?

No GPS location is required for the core activity-recovery functions.

Can I stop sharing information?

You can remove permissions or uninstall the app. If you are in a project, contact the project team to understand withdrawal and data-retention arrangements.

Is somebody monitoring me?

Generally no. AfterSurg is not an emergency, symptom or continuous monitoring service. Project teams access information according to their approved protocol and responsibilities.

Is the information anonymous?

Independent use can avoid direct identifiers. Project data may be anonymised or pseudonymised, meaning the authorised project team can hold the separate link between a participant code and their records.

Can AfterSurg tell me if something is wrong?

No. The apps do not diagnose, triage or replace clinical assessment. Contact your healthcare team or urgent-care service if you are concerned.

How do I get more help?

Use the guides above, contact your project coordinator for project-specific questions, or email support@aftersurg.com with the app name, phone model and a brief description of the problem. Do not include unnecessary health information.

Professional FAQs

Research, clinical and industry projects

Planning a project

What is the difference between AfterSurg Recovery and AfterSurg Outcomes?

Recovery provides patient-facing feedback and recovery metrics. Outcomes is configured for blinded data collection in approved research, audit and service-evaluation projects.

Who can work with AfterSurg?

Clinical teams, NHS organisations, universities, research groups, charities and industry collaborators can discuss a project.

Which project types are suitable?

Clinical trials, observational and feasibility studies, audit, quality improvement, service evaluation and real-world evidence projects may be suitable, subject to design and governance.

Which interventions can be evaluated?

The platform has been used around surgery and can support other therapeutic or healthcare interventions where activity-based recovery is relevant. Suitability is considered project by project.

Can the platform support prospective and retrospective work?

Yes. Prospective designs can establish a baseline before intervention. Retrospective work depends on available historical activity, device history, platform coverage and participant permissions.

Data, technology and governance

What information is collected?

Project configuration can include high-resolution step and activity patterns, baseline and post-intervention change, moderate-to-vigorous activity, routines, milestones and derived recovery metrics.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

AfterSurg Outcomes is available for recent iPhones and supported Android phones. Compatible wearables may contribute information through Apple Health or Health Connect.

Can the project be customised?

Configuration can include project branding, intervention types, collection windows, participant IDs, information or consent links and support arrangements.

Can collection be blinded?

Yes. AfterSurg Outcomes is intentionally blinded so participants do not receive recovery feedback that could influence behaviour.

How are participant IDs and governance handled?

The project team defines participant identifiers, the approved linkage process, access roles and responsibilities. AfterSurg supports the agreed anonymised or pseudonymised workflow.

What outputs can teams receive?

Outputs may include participant summaries, aggregate recovery curves, milestone and longer-term metrics, dashboards and governed data exports, depending on the approved project.

Who is the data controller or processor?

Roles depend on the project and are agreed during contracting and governance. They should be described clearly in participant and privacy information.

Where is information stored and protected?

The project’s hosting, encryption, access controls and retention arrangements are documented during setup and reflected in the relevant privacy and governance material.

Is AfterSurg regulated?

AfterSurg is a UKCA-marked Class I medical device registered with the MHRA. It provides descriptive recovery information and does not diagnose, triage or recommend treatment.

Outputs, delivery and costs

Can outputs support publication?

Yes, where the study design, approvals, analysis plan and reporting are appropriate. Publication claims remain the responsibility of the research team and authors.

How long does setup take?

Simple projects may be configured within weeks; complex governance, custom materials or integrations can take longer. Timing is agreed after feasibility review.

How is pricing determined?

Pricing depends on project size, duration, configuration, support, analysis and reporting requirements.

How do we obtain a project code or start a discussion?

Project codes are created as part of an agreed setup. Email info@aftersurg.com or use the professional project outline to begin.
